Route description
The start of this route follows the flat landscape in Lendava, which offers hot thermal baths and 800-year-old tradition. Do not forget to pamper yourself and enjoy the charms of the Lendava vineyards. If you’re a big fan of tasting, you should try their wonderful wine trail, along which you’ll be able to try different local wine varieties and get acquainted with the rich viticultural tradition of this area.
Continue your way towards Dolga vas settlement, which was once the heart of the Halicanum Roman post and today it is one of the biggest Jewish cemeteries in Slovenia. The next destination on your path will be Dobrovnik village with its wide streets and colourful facades. Even today, this place is very vibrant, just as it was in the past, when this location was one of the fair venues. Intertwining of Slovenian and Hungarian culture can be seen every step of the way. If you’re a tropical fan, you should definitely visit the orchid greenhouse. South of the Bukovnica settlement, you can stop by the Bukovnica Lake, which is known for its energetic spots.
Listen to the speech of the locals and find each village’s dialect characteristics. Continue your way towards Turnišče, a village dating into the 13th century, which is located in the middle of the Dolinsko region, The settlement became a square and gained its city rights the 16th century, which had an impact on the development of local crafts like shoemaking, tailoring, milling and blacksmith activity. Turnišče has a rich sacral tradition and is especially known because of its church of Saint Mary, which was firstly mentioned already in 1267. Your journey continues towards Velika Polana, also known as the “European Stork Village”; you’ll probably also get a chance to observe these elegant white birds. Velika Polana is also the birthplace of Miško Kranjec, who wrote about this place in his works in a very loving way. Visit the still-working Copek Mill, one of the authentic examples of ethnological heritage. Continues towards Mala Polana, from where you will be able to return to Lendava, where your adventure started. The flat landscape, safety, low traffic, a lot of different activities and stops along the way make this route accessible also for families.
